Biography of Omar Karami
Omar Karami, a prominent political figure in Lebanon's Sunni community, was born in 1935 in Tripoli. He is the youngest son of Abdel Hamid Karami, who played a significant role in Lebanon's independence.
Educational Background
Omar Karami pursued his education at the American University of Beirut, where he studied law. He later obtained a Master's degree in Business and Management from Cairo University in 1960.
Political Career
In 1970, Omar Karami became the Secretary-General of the Arab Liberation Party, which was founded by his brother Rashid Karami. He served as an advisor to Rashid when he became Prime Minister. However, tragedy struck in 1987 when Rashid Karami was killed in a helicopter explosion, suspected to be a bomb.
Premiership and Challenges
Omar Karami assumed the role of Prime Minister twice in his career. His first term was from 1990 to 1992, a challenging period as Lebanon was recovering from a long civil war. However, his tenure was marred by soaring inflation and unprecedented strikes, leading to his resignation.
Post-Premiership
After stepping down as Prime Minister, Omar Karami became a vocal critic of his successor, billionaire Rafik Hariri, who held the position for 12 years until October of the current year. During this time, Karami served as a member of parliament since 1991, representing his constituents.
Personal Life
Omar Karami is married and has two sons and two daughters. Despite the challenges he faced during his political career, Karami remains an influential figure in Lebanese politics, especially within the Sunni community.
