Relations with ULEB

Kamil Zagorac, Secretary General of FIBA Europe, clarified the organization's relationship with ULEB. Following controversies, including a statement from ULEB President Jordi Bertomeu and a response from FIBA Europe, Zagorac emphasized that ULEB had violated their 2004 agreement numerous times. While FIBA Europe adhered to the terms, Zagorac indicated the need for further discussions.

ULEB's Success

Despite the perceived success of ULEB tournaments, such as the NBA Europe Live, Zagorac questioned their true impact. He noted that attendances outside of Moscow were lackluster. Zagorac also highlighted the financial struggles of the EuroLeague, which had lost several sponsors and faced underwhelming television ratings in key European markets.

FIBA's Role

Zagorac emphasized FIBA Europe's commitment to promoting basketball. Unlike ULEB, which seeks financial gain, FIBA reinvests profits into developing the sport. Zagorac pointed to the growth of youth European championships, with the number of participating teams increasing significantly in recent years.

Revenue Generation

Zagorac highlighted the EuroBasket tournament as the primary source of FIBA Europe's revenue. By organizing national team competitions, FIBA caters to a broader audience and generates substantial income. In contrast, domestic club games attract a more limited number of fans.

Unprofessionalism and Overreach

Zagorac expressed disappointment in ULEB's behavior, which he characterized as disrespectful and unprofessional. He cited the organization of the NBA Europe Live without proper consultation as a prime example. Zagorac emphasized the importance of adhering to established international match protocols and respecting the authority of governing bodies.

Future Negotiations

Zagorac acknowledged the need for discussions with ULEB to address the ongoing concerns. However, he stated that the timing of such negotiations had yet to be determined.
