Nauma Ivanovich Afremov
Nauma Ivanovich Afremov was a Russian military commander and statesman of the 17th century. He is best known for his service as the siege governor of Tula during the Polish-Muscovite War (1605-1618).
Early Life and Career
Nauma was born into a noble family in the 16th century. His father, Ivan Ovremov, was a Zaporozhian Cossack who served in the oprichnina of Ivan IV. For his service, Ivan was granted a votchina (estate) in the Belevsky uyezd.
Siege of Tula
In 1618, Nauma was appointed as the siege governor of Tula. The city was under siege by a large Polish army led by Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski. Under Nauma's leadership, the citizens of Tula successfully repelled the siege for two years.
Recognition and Rewards
In recognition of his valor, Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich granted Nauma a manor in the Belevsky uyezd (Bibino village) in 1624. That same year, his son Gavril Naumovich was also granted a manor (Nizhnee Yurikovo village and Rezantseva village).
Family and Legacy
Nauma's father, Ivan Ovremov, is considered the patriarch of the Afremov noble family. Nauma himself is the ancestor of the renowned Tula historian Ivan Fyodorovich Afremov (1794-1866).
