Brigadier General Mieczysław Romer

Early Life and Military Service

Mieczysław Romer was born into a noble family (the Ostoja coat of arms) in Poland. He served as an officer in the Russian army before becoming an active participant in Polish resistance movements.

Military Leadership

During the Polish-Soviet War (1919-1920), Romer commanded the 81st Infantry Regiment and distinguished himself as a skilled military leader. From 1923 to 1926, he served as the commander of the infantry of the 18th Infantry Division and later acted as the division's commanding officer.

Retirement and Arrest

In 1927, Romer retired from active service with the rank of Brigadier General. Despite being over 70 years old and retired for more than a decade, he was arrested by the Red Army when they occupied eastern Poland in 1939.

Imprisonment and Execution

Romer was taken to the Kozelsk camp and later executed in the Katyn Forest Massacre. He was one of only two generals (the other being Mieczysław Smorawiński) whose bodies were identified during the exhumation in 1943.

Awards and Legacy

General Romer received numerous military awards, including the:
Silver Cross of the Order of Virtuti Militari (No. 6843)
Cross of Valour (four times)
Silver Cross of Merit

Romer's legacy as a brave and patriotic military leader lives on in Polish history. His sacrifice in the Katyn Massacre serves as a poignant reminder of the horrors of war and the need to honor the memory of those who have fallen in the defense of their country.
