Biography of Nehemiah Grew

Nehemiah Grew was an English botanist and physician, known as one of the founders of plant anatomy. He was born on September 26, 1641, in Atherstone, Warwickshire. Grew completed his education at the University of Cambridge and obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Leiden in 1671.

Contributions to Botany

Grew was a member of the Royal Society of London and served as its secretary from 1677. His major works focused on the structure and reproduction of plants. He conducted microscopic studies on roots, stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds. Grew was the first to describe stomata and the radial arrangement of xylem in roots. He also observed the morphology of vascular tissue, identifying a dense formation in the center of young plant stems and the process of hollow cylinder formation in older stems. Grew introduced the term "comparative anatomy" and emphasized the unity of tissue structure, suggesting that they consist of "bubbles" (cells), fibers, and tubes.

Grew's studies on flower structure led him to conclude that flowers are the reproductive organs of plants. He identified the sepals, petals, pistils, and stamens within a flower. His ideas on tissue structure and reproductive organs significantly advanced the field of botany.

Publications

Grew's main research findings were published in his books, including "The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun" (1670), "An Idea of a Philosophical History of Plants" (1672), and "The Anatomy of Plants" (1682). These publications provided valuable insights into the anatomy and development of plants.

Legacy and Death

Nehemiah Grew passed away on March 25, 1712, in London. His contributions to botany and plant anatomy laid the foundation for future scientific research in the field. Grew's work continues to be influential in the study of plant structure and reproduction.
