Early Life and Education

Nicolas de Rivière was born in France and attended the renowned École Nationale d'Administration (ENA), a prestigious institution that trains future leaders in public service.

Diplomatic Career

Early Assignments

De Rivière embarked on his diplomatic career in 1994, serving at the Permanent Mission of France to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague. He subsequently held positions at the French embassies in Washington, D.C. (1997-2001) and New York (2005-2010).

Cabinet Positions

From 2002 to 2004, de Rivière served as an economic advisor to Dominique de Villepin, then Foreign Minister. Subsequently, he became an advisor on international economic affairs for Michel Barnier, who was Foreign Minister from 2004 to 2005.

Senior Leadership Roles

In 2011, de Rivière was appointed Director for International Organizations, Human Rights, and Francophonie at the United Nations (UN), a position he held until 2014. He then became Director General for Political and Security Affairs at the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs from 2014 to 2019.

Ambassador to the United Nations

On July 8, 2019, de Rivière was appointed France's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York. In this role, he represents France on all matters related to the organization, including peace and security, human rights, and sustainable development.

Honors and Recognition

In July 2015, de Rivière was awarded the prestigious Legion of Honor, France's highest order of merit.
