A Life-Changing Diagnosis: Nicole's Battle with Lupus

In 2013, Nicole was a healthy 23-year-old when a routine HPV vaccine triggered a dormant autoimmune condition: lupus.

The Onset of Lupus

Following the vaccination, Nicole experienced excruciating joint pain that migrated throughout her body, accompanied by a rash. Despite the lack of scientific evidence linking the HPV vaccine to lupus activation, research suggests it may be a potential trigger for some individuals. Within weeks, Nicole's symptoms progressed to hair loss, memory lapses, and impaired vision.

Hospitalization and Diagnosis

After experiencing a sudden 13-pound weight loss, Nicole was diagnosed with lupus and hospitalized. The relentless battle with symptoms led to kidney failure in 2016, requiring dialysis and three rounds of grueling chemotherapy in an attempt to manage the disease.

The Heartbreaking Diagnosis

In February 2017, lupus took its most severe toll, attacking Nicole's heart after 12 months of dialysis. Unable to breathe and experiencing chest pain, an echocardiogram revealed her heart function had plummeted to 20%. Nicole underwent emergency surgery, known as a pericardial window, to relieve pressure on her heart.

Struggles and Obstacles

Throughout her battle with lupus, Nicole valiantly concealed her true condition. However, the cardiac failure proved to be insurmountable. "I had been in a deep depression since the beginning," Nicole admits. "Mentally and physically, it was the all-time low for me."

Hope and Healing

Despite the setbacks, Nicole's support system and unwavering faith in God sustained her. Through rest and self-care, her physical and mental health gradually improved. Today, she is thrilled to announce that her heart failure has subsided.

Lessons Learned

Nicole advocates for perseverance, self-care, and research. "Never give up, no matter what," she urges fellow sufferers. "Be your own health advocate. No one knows your body like you do." She also emphasizes the importance of rest, listening to one's body, and seeking knowledge.

A Complex Condition

Lupus is a challenging autoimmune disease that remains incurable. However, with early diagnosis and proper management, its symptoms can be controlled. The disease can manifest in varying degrees of severity, ranging from inflammation in joints and skin to more severe damage to vital organs, including the heart, lungs, brain, and kidneys.
