Professor Nikola Kljusev: A Pioneering Economist and Statesman
Early Life and EducationProfessor Nikola Kljusev was born in Skopje, Macedonia, in 1927. His distinguished academic journey commenced in 1953 when he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Belgrade. He later obtained a doctorate in economic sciences from the same university, specializing in "Criteria and Methods for Evaluating Economic Efficiency of Investments."
Academic and Research Career
Kljusev's research career took flight in 1953, serving as an assistant at the Research Institute of Industry in Macedonia. His scholarly contributions extended from 1960 to 1967 as a research associate at the Institute of Economics in Macedonia. In 1972, he was appointed as Professor of Economics at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje. In addition to his prolific publications and academic research, Kljusev's intellectual pursuits included penning poetry and essays.
Political Leadership
From 1991 to 1992, Kljusev held the momentous position of Prime Minister of the newly independent Republic of Macedonia. During his tenure, he spearheaded the introduction of the Macedonian denar as the national currency. Notably, he skillfully led the delicate negotiations for the withdrawal of Yugoslav troops from Macedonia. Despite his significant role as Prime Minister, Kljusev remained unaffiliated with any political party during his term.
Subsequent Political Engagements
Following his premiership, Kljusev joined VMRO-DPMNE, one of Macedonia's major political parties. He ascended to the role of Chairman of VMRO-DPMNE's Executive Council in 1997. From 1998 to 2000, he re-entered the government as Minister of Defense.
