Early Life and Career
Nikolai Semyonovich Semyonko, a Ukrainian and member of the Communist Party since 1943, joined the Soviet Army in 1940 and graduated from the Voroshilovgrad Military Aviation School in 1942. He began his combat career as a young officer, serving as a flight commander, squadron commander, and regiment navigator.
Combat Exploits
As a pilot during World War II, Semyonko completed 227 successful combat missions, destroying or damaging 7 tanks, 10 artillery pieces, 5 aircraft, 19 trucks, a locomotive, 2 ammunition depots, 17 anti-aircraft emplacements, and numerous other enemy assets. His exceptional skills as a navigator were showcased during the battles for Left-Bank Ukraine and the liberation of Donbas and his hometown of Slavyansk.
Liberation of Ukraine
Semyonko actively participated in the liberation of Ukraine from Nazi occupation. As a fighter-communist, he utilized each combat sortie to inflict heavy losses on the enemy and enhance the reputation of his squadron. In a notable mission to destroy a German artillery battery, he employed a clever maneuver to avoid anti-aircraft fire and successfully attack the target.
Success in Belarus
Following the liberation of Ukraine, Semyonko took part in the offensive against the German forces in Belarus. With over 100 successful combat missions and four combat orders to his credit, he led a group of six IL-2 aircraft in a devastating attack on a railway station in Tolochin. The first strike disabled a locomotive and ignited several fuel tanks, while subsequent attacks left both trains ablaze and destroyed the second locomotive.
Battle for East Prussia
During the Battle for East Prussia, Semyonko's experience as a navigator served him well as he led attacks against enemy reinforcements and provided air support for Soviet tank divisions. He successfully targeted a column of vehicles and anti-aircraft equipment, inflicting significant damage on German forces.
Final Mission and Sacrifice
On April 20, 1945, Semyonko embarked on his 227th combat mission as the navigator of a group of IL-2 aircraft. While on patrol, he noticed a concealed anti-aircraft battery and initiated a diving attack to neutralize the threat. Despite receiving permission to depart, Semyonko pressed the attack, leading to the destruction of the battery. However, his aircraft was hit in the process, and he crashed, sacrificing his life in the service of his country.
Legacy
Nikolai Semyonovich Semyonko is remembered as a valiant warrior and true hero of the Soviet Union. A bronze bust in his honor stands in Slavyansk, where a pioneer guard stands in perpetual silence, and his mother's unwavering love is etched in her grieving gaze. His legacy lives on through the appreciation of his fellow soldiers, the admiration of his countrymen, and the eternal gratitude of those he helped liberate.
