Nikolai Alekseevich Alekseev: A Distinguished Soviet War Hero
Early Life and EducationBorn on March 30, 1914, in the village of Rybnoye, Nikolai Alekseevich Alekseev completed nine years of schooling in Ryazan in 1933. Subsequently, he worked as an assistant locomotive driver and as the manager of a club in the village of Mervisn.
Military Service
Alekseev enlisted in the army in December 1936 and graduated from the Orenburg Military Aviation School for Pilots and Observer Pilots in 1937. He served as a navigator in the Orlov Military District's AON-2, where he saw combat action in China from August 1939 to January 1940, flying DB-3A bombers under the command of N.A. Kozlov.
World War II
During World War II, Alekseev served as a squadron navigator in the 750th Long-Range Aviation Regiment from December 1941 to May 1943. He participated in the counteroffensive near Moscow, the defense of Leningrad, and the Battle of Stalingrad.
From May 1943 onward, Alekseev held various positions, including squadron navigator, deputy regimental navigator for radio navigation, and navigator of the 18th Guards Long-Range Aviation Regiment from December 1943. He took part in the liberation of Smolensk, Crimea, and Romania, as well as the storming of Königsberg and the Berlin Operation.
By August 1944, Alekseev had completed 218 combat missions in DB-3 and Il-4 bombers. For his courage and heroism, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on August 19, 1944, along with the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star Medal.
Post-War Career
After the war, Alekseev continued his service in Long-Range Aviation and graduated from the Higher Navigator Training Courses at the 2nd Ivanovo Higher Aviation Officer School for Long-Range Aviation in 1947. From 1953 onward, he served as a navigator-inspector in the Main Headquarters of the Air Force. Alekseev retired with the rank of Colonel in May 1961.
Later Years and Legacy
Alekseev lived in Moscow until his passing on September 28, 1977. He was interred at the Kuzminskoye Cemetery in Moscow. His memory is honored through the numerous awards and medals he received, including the Gold Star Medal of the Hero of the Soviet Union, two Orders of Lenin, and two Orders of the Red Star.
