Early Life and Education
Nikolai Izrailevich Brozgol was born into a working-class Jewish family in Leningrad. He graduated from a mechanical technical school and worked as a foreman in a mechanical workshop.
Military Career
Pre-World War IIBrozgol joined the Red Army in 1932 and became a member of the Communist Party the same year. He graduated from the Voroshilov Military Academy in 1936 and the Higher Artillery Officers' School in 1940.
World War II
Brozgol served on the front lines from June 1941. As commander of the 24th Guards Heavy Artillery Brigade, he supported the crossing of the Dnieper River and the capture of a bridgehead in September-October 1943. In November, his brigade assisted in the liberation of Kyiv.
Post-War Service and Retirement
After the war, Brozgol continued to serve in the Soviet Army. He graduated from the Higher Artillery Officers' School in 1947. In 1956, he retired and returned to Leningrad, where he worked and lived before passing away. He was buried in the Southern Cemetery of Saint Petersburg.
Awards and Honors
Brozgol was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in May 1944 for his exceptional bravery and leadership. He also received the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky 2nd Class, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st Class, two Orders of the Red Star, and numerous medals. During the war, he was also honored by the United Kingdom with the Golden Badge of the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (4th Class).
