Nikolai Cherginets: A Polymathic Figure in Belarusian Politics and Beyond
Early Life and Education
Nikolai Cherginets was born on October 17, 1937, in Minsk, Belarus. He began his professional life as a footballer, playing for various clubs in Minsk, Vinnitsa, and Chisinau. After leaving football, he worked as a machinist at a factory in Minsk.
Cherginets pursued higher education during his time in the workforce, graduating from the Higher School of Coaches. He later earned a law degree from the Belarusian State University and a Candidate of Legal Sciences degree.
Military and Law Enforcement Career
After graduating from law school, Cherginets joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Byelorussian SSR. He rose through the ranks, eventually becoming head of the Criminal Investigation Department.
In 1984, Cherginets was deployed to Afghanistan where he served until 1987. Upon his return, he was appointed head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for Transport in Belarus.
Political Career
In 1993, Cherginets entered politics as chairman of the Committee for Social Protection of Servicemen and War Veterans. He was later elected to the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, where he served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on International Affairs and National Security.
Other Accomplishments and Awards
Beyond his political career, Cherginets has made significant contributions to the fields of literature, journalism, and law enforcement. He is a prolific author, having written over 30 books. He is also a member of the Union of Journalists and the Union of Filmmakers of Belarus.
Cherginets has been recognized for his achievements with numerous awards, including the Alexander Fadeev and Valentin Pikul literary prizes, the Order of Lenin, and the Order of the Red Banner. In 1998, he was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for his diverse accomplishments in culture and science.
International Relations
Cherginets has played an active role in international relations, serving as a member of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia. He is also chairman of the Society for Friendship between Belarus and Kyrgyzstan and co-chairman of the International Literary Fund.
