Early Life and Education

Nikolai Aleksandrovich Danilov, known as "Danilov-ryzhiy" (the redhead), was born into a military family and received his education at the 3rd Alexandrovsky College (1886) and the Nikolaev Academy of the General Staff (1893).

Military Career

Pre-World War I

After graduating from the Nikolaev Academy, Danilov was commissioned into the Leib-Guard Moscow Regiment. He held various staff positions, including Senior Adjutant of the 1st Guards Infantry Division (1895-1897) and Assistant Clerk (1897-1902) and Clerk (1902-1904) of the War Ministry's Chancellery. In 1901, he became an Extraordinary Professor of Tactics at the Nikolaev Academy.

Russo-Japanese War

During the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), Danilov served as Chief of Chancellery of the Manchurian Army's field headquarters. Near the end of the war, he was appointed Acting Chief of Staff of the Commander-in-Chief of all land and sea forces. For his services during the war, he was awarded the Golden Sword.

Post-Russo-Japanese War

After the war, Danilov served as Assistant Chief (1905-1911) and then Chief (1911-1914) of the War Ministry's Chancellery, while also continuing to lecture at the Nikolaev Academy. He was the author of numerous military history works, including "Historical Sketch of the Activities of the War Ministry's Chancellery" and "Historical Sketch of the Development of Military Administration in Russia."

World War I

Outbreak

With the mobilization of 1914, Danilov was appointed Chief Quartermaster of the North-Western Front. He commanded the 23rd Army Corps (August-November 1914) and the 10th Army Corps (June 1916), which was transferred to the 2nd Army in August.

Commander of the 2nd Army

On June 12, 1917, Danilov became Commander of the 2nd Army, Western Front. During the October Revolution of 1917, he failed to take action to prevent the army's collapse and expressed loyalty to the new Soviet government. On November 20, he was dismissed from command.

Later Career

After the end of World War I, Danilov served in the Red Army. He taught at the Academy of the General Staff (1919-1921) and later became a professor at the Military Academy of the Red Army. From 1931 to 1933, he served as an inspector of the Red Army's staff.
