Russian-French Artist

Nikolai Dvigubsky was born in France to Russian émigré parents. His cousin was the famous actress Marina Vlady. He studied at the French Academy of Fine Arts and moved to the USSR with his family in 1956.

Soviet Career

In the Soviet Union, Dvigubsky graduated from the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK) as a production designer. He befriended Andrei Konchalovsky, who had a keen interest in the West. Dvigubsky worked on films by Konchalovsky, Andrei Tarkovsky, Yuli Raizman, and Gleb Panfilov.

Personal Life

In the USSR, Dvigubsky married three actresses: Zhanna Bolotova (while studying at VGIK), Irina Kupchenko (after filming "The Nobleman's Nest" in 1969), and Natalya Arinbasarova (1970). With Arinbasarova, he had a daughter, Ekaterina Dvigubskaya (born 1974), who became an actress, filmmaker, and writer.

Return to Paris

In 1980, Dvigubsky returned to Paris and married a Frenchwoman named Genevieve. He painted in his castle in Normandy.

Dvigubsky passed away on October 25, 2008. His filmography includes:
