Early Career

Otto Eugen Reinhold Fürbringer joined the German Navy (Reichsmarine) on April 5, 1935. After completing basic training, he served on the training bark Gorch Fock from June 18 to September 26, 1935.

Submariner

In 1941, Fürbringer took command of the submarine U-564. In August of that year, he sank the British corvette HMS Zinnia. In October 1942, he left the submarine to become an instructor.

Command and Honors

Later, Fürbringer served in the 27th Submarine Flotilla with Corvette Captain Erich Topp. In the final year of the war, he was promoted to Fregattenkapitän and became commander-in-chief of submarines in Norwegian waters. In September 1944, he extended his command to the North Sea.

Fürbringer received numerous awards, including the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, one of only three submariners to receive the honor. He was also awarded the Submarine War Badge, the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st class, the Clasp to the Submarine War Badge with Diamonds, and the War Merit Cross 2nd class with Swords.
