Early Life and Education
Николай Николаевич Печёный was born on February 15, 1919, in the village of Belogorodka, now part of the Kyiv-Svyatoshinsky district in the Kyiv region of Ukraine. He came from a peasant family. After completing 10th grade in secondary school, he attended a vocational school (FZU) and worked as a mechanic at the Lenin's Forge plant in Kyiv. He also pursued his passion for aviation at the local flying club.
Military Career
In 1937, Peчёny was conscripted into the Red Army. A year later, he graduated from the Odessa Military Aviation School of Pilots. From August 1942 onwards, Senior Lieutenant Peчёny fought as part of the 8th Fighter Aviation Regiment (which became the 42nd Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment on February 8, 1943). He fought on the Southern, North Caucasus, Crimean, and 2nd Belorussian Fronts.
World War II Exploits
During World War II, Peчёny flew 219 successful combat missions in Yak-1, Yak-7B, and Yak-9U aircraft. He participated in 64 air battles, personally shooting down 20 enemy planes and 3 more as part of a group. He was twice wounded and concussed during the war.
Post-War Service
After the war, Peчёny continued his service in the Soviet Air Force, where he mastered jet aircraft. On May 15, 1946, he was awarded the prestigious title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and valor in combat. He later graduated from the Higher Flight Tactical Advanced Training Courses for Officers and retired in 1957 as a Colonel at the age of 37.
Civilian Life and Legacy
After retirement, Peчёny settled in Kyiv, where he worked in various capacities. He was honored with the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War 1st Class, the Order of the Red Star, and various medals. Николай Николаевич Печёный's legacy as a renowned aviator and war hero continues to inspire generations.
