Birth and LineageGrand Duke Nikolai Mikhailovich Romanov was born on April 14, 1859, in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was the eldest son of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich and Olga Fedorovna, and a grandson of Nicholas I.
Early Life and Education
As a child, Nikolai was known for his intelligence, lively disposition, and sensitivity. Raised in a strict and Spartan household, he received a rigorous education that included languages, botany, chemistry, history of art, and military strategy. His nickname, "Bimbobo," was derived from the character in Rudyard Kipling's children's story, due to his insatiable curiosity.
Military Career
Nikolai embarked on a military career at the urging of his mother, who desired him to follow in the footsteps of his father. He graduated from the Page Corps, Cavalry School, and General Staff Academy. He served in various positions within the Caucasian Army, eventually commanding the famed Caucasian Grenadier Division.
Passion for Entomology
Despite his military career, Nikolai's true passion lay in entomology. He traveled extensively, collaborating with renowned scientists in the field. In 1879, he participated in an expedition to study the fauna and flora of Central Asia. He identified several new species of butterflies and named one subspecies after his mother.
Historical Interests
As Nikolai grew older, he developed a keen interest in history. He amassed a vast collection of historical artifacts, particularly portraits and miniatures. He also dedicated himself to research and publishing numerous historical works.
Controversial Views
Known as a "frondeur" or dissenter within the Romanov family, Nikolai was not shy in expressing his opinions. He publicly criticized Empress Alexandra Feodorovna after 1914 and penned a letter to Nicholas II questioning his reign.
Later Life and Arrest
Nikolai resigned from his military duties in 1901 and became a general adjutant to Nicholas II. In 1919, during the Russian Revolution, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress. He was executed on January 24, 1919, at the age of 59.
