Early Life and Education
Mykola Rudkovsky was born in Ukraine into a family of teachers. In 1985, he graduated from high school and joined the Communist Youth League (VLKSM). From 1986 to 1988, he served in the Strategic Missile Forces of the USSR.
Rudkovsky later pursued higher education. In 1994, he graduated from the Vienna University of Economics in Austria. In 1996, he completed a degree in history and social studies from the Chernigov State Pedagogical Institute. In 2001, he obtained a degree in economics from the Kyiv National Economic University.
Business and Political Career
In 1994, Rudkovsky became the chief consultant in the Economic Department of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine under President Leonid Kuchma. From 1996 to 1998, he served as director of the state-owned enterprise "Gosinvest Ukraine." Later, he became deputy chairman of the board of the joint-stock company "Ukrgazprom."
Rudkovsky's political career began in 2000, when he became an assistant-consultant to parliament member Valentina Semenyuk. In 2006, he was elected to the Ukrainian Parliament on the Socialist Party of Ukraine (SPU) ticket. He was also elected mayor of Chernihiv but chose to serve in Parliament.
Minister of Transport and Communications
In 2006, Rudkovsky was appointed Minister of Transport and Communications in the coalition government of Viktor Yanukovych. He served in this position until the government resigned in 2007.
Chairman of the Socialist Party of Ukraine
In 2013, Rudkovsky was elected Chairman of the Socialist Party of Ukraine. He left the Party of Regions faction in the Parliament and became a member of the Fuel and Energy Committee.
Controversies and Legal Battles
Rudkovsky has been involved in several controversies and legal battles. In 2014, he threw a stone at the Russian Embassy during protests in Ukraine, leading to an assault by demonstrators and the opening of a criminal case in Russia. He was detained in Moscow in 2018 but was later released.
Rudkovsky has also been included in Ukraine's list of the wealthiest individuals. In 2016, Forbes Ukraine ranked him 37th with an estimated net worth of 124 million dollars.
