Biography of Nikolay Svitenko
Nikolay Ivanovich Svitenko was born on December 6, 1913, in the city of Kharkov, in a working-class family. He graduated from a machine-building technical school and worked at a machine-building plant. In 1934, he joined the Red Army and in 1937 graduated from a military aviation school for pilots. He participated in various military campaigns, including the Soviet invasion of Western Ukraine and Western Belarus in 1939, and the Soviet-Finnish War from 1939 to 1940.

In June 1941, Svitenko found himself on the frontlines of the Great Patriotic War. By January 1942, he became the commander of the 7th Fighter Aviation Regiment's squadron, flying 135 combat missions and personally shooting down 5 enemy aircraft and 7 in a group with his comrades. On February 10, 1943, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his courage and military valor in battles with the enemy.
Throughout the war, Svitenko flew a total of more than 380 combat missions, engaging in 102 aerial battles and shooting down a total of 15 enemy aircraft personally and 7 in a group. After the war, he remained in the Air Force and in 1946 graduated from officer training courses and in 1952 from the Military Academy of the General Staff.
In 1958, Major General of Aviation N.I. Svitenko retired and lived in Kharkov. He was decorated with the orders of Lenin (twice), Red Banner (twice), Kutuzov 3rd class, Patriotic War 1st class, Red Star (twice), and various medals for his military service.
Svitenko's military career was marked by his exceptional skills and bravery in combat. He was known for his calmness and exceptional leadership, inspiring his subordinates to great achievements. His contributions to the defense and liberation of Leningrad during the blockade were particularly significant. He fought in the air above the city for 900 days and nights, displaying unwavering courage and skill.
Svitenko's exceptional leadership and combat skills were recognized not only during the war but also in peacetime. He trained young pilots and commanded various aviation units. His dedication to the aviation profession and his country made him a respected figure in the aviation community.
After retiring from the military, Svitenko returned to his hometown and continued to live there until the end of his days. He passed away, leaving behind a legacy of bravery and commitment to his country. Nikolay Ivanovich Svitenko will always be remembered as a hero and a distinguished aviator.
