Nikolai Vaganov Biography

Nikolai Nikolaevich Vaganov, a Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and chief physician of the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital, is a renowned figure in the field of pediatrics. Born on October 24, 1941, in Rodniki, Ivanovo Oblast, Vaganov's parents were Nikolai Andreevich Vaganov (1914-1996), a serviceman, and Kapitolina Fedorovna Vaganova (1914-1970), a teacher.

Vaganov graduated from the Ivanovo State Medical Institute in 1965. He voluntarily requested to be assigned to Karelia, where he began his medical career as a district pediatrician at the Segezha Central District Hospital. Shortly after, he was appointed as the district pediatrician of the Segezha district. In 1968, he was invited to work at the Ministry of Health of the Karelian ASSR as a physician-inspector, and in 1970, he became the head of the pediatric service in Karelia, serving as the chief pediatrician of the Republic for 16 years.

In 1986, Vaganov was appointed as the Deputy Minister of Health of the Karelian ASSR. In 1987, he was transferred to the Ministry of Health of the USSR, where he held the position of Deputy Head of the Main Department of Medical and Preventive Care for Children and Mothers. In 1989, he became the Deputy Minister of Health of the RSFSR and served in this position until 1996.

In 1991, Vaganov became the head of the Department of Medical and Social Problems of Motherhood and Childhood at the Central Institute for Advanced Medical Education (Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education). In 1998, he was appointed as the chief physician of the Republican (now Russian) Children's Clinical Hospital of the Ministry of Health of Russia.

Throughout his career, Vaganov has authored more than 120 scientific works and five monographs. He has supervised several doctoral dissertations and his recent scientific focus has been on specialized inpatient care for children and monitoring the state of pediatric services in Russia. Vaganov has been awarded the Medal for Merit in Healthcare and the Medal for Contribution to Resort Development. He is also a laureate of the international Oliver Prize.

Vaganov has been actively involved in public, scientific, and educational activities. He is the Deputy Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Russian Pediatric Association, a member of the Expert Council of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Health, a member of the Presidium of the Expert Council of the "Attention" Program, and a member of the Presidium of the Russian Children's Fund.

In his spare time, Nikolai Vaganov enjoys sports such as tennis, skiing, and cycling. He currently resides and works in Moscow. He is married to Galina Nikolaevna Vaganova, a physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. Their daughter Maria is also a pediatrician and a clinical pharmacologist at the Russian Children's Clinical Hospital. Vaganov has two granddaughters, Dasha and Sofia.
