Early Life and Education

Born into a family of clergy, Chaliapin graduated from the Orenburg Teachers' Institute in 1892. He sang in the Moscow Synodal Choir from 1894 to 1897 and studied singing at the Moscow Conservatory under Camillo Everardi and Elizaveta Lavrovskaya from 1895 to 1901.

Stage Debut and Moscow Opera Career

While still a student, Chaliapin made his stage debut with the Moscow Private Russian Opera in 1900. After graduating with a silver medal in 1901, he continued to perform with the company, alongside concert performances with the Circle of Lovers of Russian Music. From 1904 to 1911, he was a member of S. Zimin's Moscow Private Opera.

Provincial Success and Characterization

Chaliapin also performed in provincial opera houses, notably in Odessa (1912-1913, 1915-1917) and Kiev (1914-1915). Critics praised his "bright scenic talent" and "high artistic intelligence," noting his exceptional acting skills, physicality, and vocal versatility.

Opera Repertoire and Notable Roles

Chaliapin created numerous operatic roles, including Klusha (first performer in "Skomorokh"), Pyotr (first performer in "Strashnaya Mest"), Yakub ("Saratsin"), and the Devil ("Cherevichki"). He became renowned for his interpretations of Onegin ("Eugene Onegin"), Escamillo ("Carmen"), and Boris Godunov ("Boris Godunov").

Oперетта and Recordings

In addition to opera, Chaliapin also performed in operetta, notably as Menelaus in "La Belle Helene." He recorded 19 works on gramophone, including arias from "Boris Godunov" and "Eugene Onegin." His recordings can be found in the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture, the Bakhrushin State Central Theatre Museum, and the Central State Archives of Sound Recordings.

Later Years

In the 1930s, Chaliapin worked as a director at the Sofia National Opera, where he staged "Boris Godunov." He later transitioned to teaching and became a respected vocal pedagogue.
