Nikolas Bogusław Zenowicz
Nikolas Bogusław Zenowicz was a prominent statesman in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, hailing from the Zenowicz family and bearing the "Despot" coat of arms.
Early Life and Education
Born as the son of Krzysztof Jerzy Zenowicz, Nikolas Bogusław received his education at the University of Basel. He began his political career in 1614 as the starost of Czeczersk and Propojsk. In 1618, he became the castellan of Polotsk.
Religious Conversion and Military Service
In 1620, a significant turning point occurred in Nikolas Bogusław's life. Abandoning his ancestral Calvinist faith, he converted to Catholicism. His military service would prove to be his undoing.
Battle of Khotyn and Death
During the Polish-Ottoman War, Nikolas Bogusław led a force of 1,800 soldiers at the Battle of Khotyn. Together with the regiments of Sapieha and Opaliński, as well as the Zaporozhian Cossacks, his troops faced the brunt of the Turkish onslaught. In the heat of battle, his horse carried him into the thick of the enemy, where he sustained severe wounds. On September 7, 1621, Nikolas Bogusław succumbed to his injuries.
Family and Legacy
Nikolas Bogusław was married to Anna Chodkiewicz, with whom he had two daughters, Zofia and Anna Zofia. As he left no male heir, he became the last male descendant of the main branch of the Zenowicz family.
Commemoration and Poetry
After his death, Nikolas Bogusław's mother, Teodora, commissioned a poem titled "Kazań" from Jakub Gaziusz in 1622, which eulogized him as "a man of great renown, a senator in counsel, an orator in assemblies, a philosopher in learning, a castellan in districts, and a valiant colonel in battles." His name also appears in Ivan Gundulić's poem "Osman," which celebrates the Battle of Khotyn.
