Young Avenger in the Great Patriotic War

Nina Azelina was a member of the underground organization "Young Avengers" during the Great Patriotic War. After completing eight grades at Obol Secondary School, she joined the Komsomol (Communist Youth League).

Joining the Underground

In May 1942, Azelina became a member of the "Young Avengers." Assigned by the Sirotino underground district committee of the Communist Party of Belarus, she worked as a copyist in the commandant's office. This gave her access to classified documents, which she provided to partisans.

Railway Station Sabotage

In the summer of 1943, Azelina was tasked with sabotaging the water tower at the Obol railway station in the Vitebsk region. On August 1, 1943, she infiltrated the guarded station and planted a mine near a coal pile outside the boiler house.

Successful Explosion

The mine detonated on August 3, destroying the water tower. Azelina had warned her father, who worked there, not to come to work that day. The sabotage stranded 11 trains at the station, disrupting operations for two weeks.

Other Sabotage Actions

Azelina also collaborated with Zina Luzgina, Fruza Zenkova, and Vladimir Ezovit on missions to destroy a flax mill and an electrical station in August 1943.

Capture and Execution

On August 26 (or 28), 1943, Azelina was captured along with her fellow underground members. After torture in Shumilino and Polotsk, she was executed by firing squad in the village of Borovukha on October 5, 1943.

Recognition

Posthumously, Nina Azelina was awarded the Order of the Red Banner.
