Norio Murakami: A Trailblazing Tech Leader
As Vice President and Managing Director for Google Japan, Norio Murakami spearheads all aspects of the company's commercial operations in the country. His impact on Japan's tech industry extends far beyond Google, having played a pivotal role in establishing e-learning and driving innovation.
Early Career and Leadership at Docent Japan
Murakami's career began as a Microcomputer System Engineer at Hitachi Electronics K.K. His expertise in engineering and management led him to various executive positions, including CEO of Informix Japan, Vice President at Informix, and Marketing Director at Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) Japan. Notably, he spent five years at DEC's headquarters in Massachusetts as a result of this acquisition.
In November 2001, Murakami founded Docent Japan, the Japanese arm of the e-learning company. Under his leadership, Docent forged partnerships with Accenture, NEC, and Works Applications, establishing the company as a leader in Japan's e-learning landscape.
Joining Google Japan
In April 2003, Murakami joined Google Japan as Vice President and Managing Director. In this role, he oversees the entire commercial and marketing operations for Google in Japan, driving its growth and expansion.
Career at Northern Telecom
Prior to Google, Murakami held the position of President and CEO of Northern Telecom Japan from 1997 to 1999. During his tenure, he successfully merged the company with Bay Networks Japan, whose parent company was later acquired by Northern Telecom and renamed Nortel Networks Japan. In 2000, Murakami led the transition of the business from circuit switching to IP, driving the company to record profitability and revenue growth. He remained as President and CEO of Nortel Networks Japan until mid-2001.

Murakami holds a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Kyoto University. His exceptional leadership and contributions to the tech industry have earned him widespread recognition and respect.
