Norm Nixon Biography

Norm Nixon, an American basketball player, had a successful career in the NBA, playing for 12 seasons. He played for the 'Los Angeles Lakers' and 'San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers' teams. Norm was the youngest of three sons to his parents, Mary and Elmer. When he was just 2 years old, his parents divorced. Mary's mother and aunt helped raise the children. All the children, Norman, Ken, and Ron, faithfully attended the Methodist church.

Early Sports Career

In school, Nixon was heavily involved in sports. He played football at such a high level that he was offered a chance to try out for the 'Pittsburgh Steelers' and 'Dallas Cowboys.' He also captained the school basketball team to win the state championship in 1973. Additionally, he excelled in running and became the state champion in high jump. After high school, he attended Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he played basketball for the 'Duquesne Dukes' and became one of the team's key players. In fact, in 2001, he was included in the top 5 players ever to represent the university. During his time with the 'Duquesne Dukes,' Nixon scored 1805 points in 104 games.

NBA Career

After college, Norm Nixon joined the NBA team 'Los Angeles Lakers.' He played for the Lakers for 6 seasons, and the team won the NBA championship in 1980 and 1982. In 1983, during one of the finals games, Nixon dislocated his shoulder due to a collision with an opponent but continued to play. At the start of the 1983-1984 season, Norm was traded to the 'San Diego Clippers' in exchange for Byron Scott. The first two seasons with the new team were remarkably productive for Nixon, leading the league in assists. However, he missed most of the following two seasons due to injuries. Although he didn't win any titles with the 'Clippers,' he set a record that remains unbroken: making 13 assists in 48 minutes. Throughout his NBA career, Nixon played 768 games, earned 12065 points (averaging 15.7 points per game), and made 6386 assists (averaging 8.3 assists per game).

Post-NBA Career

After leaving the NBA in March 1989, Nixon played one season for the Italian top league team 'Scavolini Pesaro.' He then became a sports agent, representing athletes such as Doug Edwards, Samaki Walker, Jalen Rose, Gary Grant, and many others, including the renowned artist LL Cool J. Additionally, together with his wife, Norm founded the Debbie Allen Dance Academy in Culver City, California. He also worked as a sports commentator and analyst for several companies.

It's worth mentioning that since 1984, Norm Nixon has been married to actress, producer, and dancer Debbie Allen. They have a daughter and two sons, one of whom became an actor, while the other followed in his father's footsteps and currently plays for his university's basketball team.
