Nshan Darbinyan: Armenian Hero of the Great Patriotic War
Early Life and Military CareerNshan Darbinyan was born on May 10, 1922, in the village of Lusagyukh, Armenia. After completing his education, he worked as a tractor driver. In July 1941, he volunteered for the Red Army and underwent military training in Stalingrad and then served near the Don River.
Battle of Stalingrad
During the Battle of Stalingrad, Darbinyan fought with the Red Army to defend the city. On November 17, 1942, he was severely wounded and sent to a hospital in Samarkand. After his recovery, he was sent to Nizhny Tagil for training as a tank driver.
Tank Driver in the 49th Guards Tank Brigade
Upon completing his training, Darbinyan rejoined the front as a tank driver in the 49th Guards Tank Brigade, 12th Guards Tank Corps, 2nd Guards Tank Army, 1st Belorussian Front. As a senior sergeant, he displayed exceptional courage and heroism in battle.
Breakthrough at Inowrocław
On January 21, 1945, while fighting in Poland, Darbinyan's T-34 tank was part of a group that spearheaded the assault on the city of Inowrocław. They captured a railway station, telegraph, radio station, and airfield, effectively cutting off enemy escape routes.
Hero of the Soviet Union
For his bravery and leadership, Darbinyan was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on February 27, 1945. He was among the 33 soldiers and officers of the 49th Guards Tank Brigade to receive this prestigious honor during the war.
Post-War Life
After the war, Darbinyan attended the party school of the Central Committee of the Armenian Communist Party. He held various positions in his hometown, including party secretary, chairman of the consumer union, and chief of the city gas supply.
