Early Life and Military Service
Birth and ChildhoodPetr Mikhaylovich Gavrilov was born on June 17, 1900, in the village of Alveedino, present-day Tatarstan, to a peasant family. At the age of 15, he traveled to Kazan and worked as a laborer, participating in the October Armed Uprising.
Civil War and Early Career
In 1918, Gavrilov joined the Red Army and fought in the Russian Civil War. After the war, he remained in the army and became a member of the Communist Party in 1922. He graduated from the Vladikavkaz Infantry School in 1925 and the M.V. Frunze Military Academy in 1939.
World War II
Defense of Brest FortressFrom June 22 to July 23, 1941, Major Gavrilov led the defense of the Eastern Fort in the Brest Fortress at the start of the Great Patriotic War. He rallied surviving soldiers and commanders from multiple units and sealed off potential enemy entry points.
Capture and Imprisonment
On July 23, Gavrilov was severely wounded by an exploding shell and captured unconscious. He endured years of captivity in German concentration camps, including Hammelburg and Ravensbrück.
Post-War Life
Return and RecognitionGavrilov was liberated by Soviet troops in May 1945. He was reinstated in his rank but expelled from the Communist Party. He continued to serve in the Soviet Army until 1946 and then lived in Tatarstan until 1947.
In 1956, the publication of S.S. Smirnov's book "Brest Fortress" shed new light on his role. Gavrilov was reinstated in the party and awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on January 30, 1957.
Legacy and Honors
Gavrilov traveled throughout the Soviet Union and engaged in social activism. He received two Orders of Lenin and was made an Honorary Citizen of Brest. His name adorns streets in Krasnodar and Pestretsy, and a bust of him stands in the village of Kon, Tatarstan.
