Early Life and Education
Vladimir Vasilyevich Mikhaylin was born on July 25, 1915, in Moscow. He graduated from the Kaluga Agricultural Technical School and worked as a technical director for two state farms before enrolling at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy in Moscow in September 1937.
Naval Career
In July 1939, Mikhaylin became a cadet at the M.V. Frunze Higher Naval School. During his final year, he served on the cruiser "Aurora" and the destroyer "Lenin," based in Liepaja.
World War II
With the outbreak of World War II, Mikhaylin was assigned to the tugboat No. 6, tasked with protecting Leningrad and Kronstadt from German air attacks. In November 1941, he was promoted to lieutenant and joined the Northern Fleet, serving as an officer on the minesweeper T-65.
During his service on the Northern Fleet, Mikhaylin participated in the rescue of survivors from the ill-fated PQ-17 convoy. He later commanded the minesweeper T-110, which earned a Red Banner for its actions in clearing mines and sinking a German submarine. Mikhaylin received the Order of the Red Banner for his leadership.
Post-War Service
After the war, Mikhaylin served in the Pacific Fleet. In 1945, he led the landing operation in the Korean port of Seisin. He later commanded the frigate EK-9, which carried Soviet troops to Anadyr in extremely challenging weather conditions.
In 1948, Mikhaylin served as a senior officer in the Organizational-Mobilization Department of the Naval General Staff. He then attended the Lenin Naval Academy in Leningrad and subsequently commanded several cruisers in the Black Sea Fleet.
Senior Naval Officer
From 1963 to 1967, Mikhaylin served as Deputy Commander of the Baltic Fleet. He then became Commander of the fleet in 1967. In 1970, he was appointed Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Navy for Naval Educational Institutions.
From 1978 to 1983, Mikhaylin held the position of Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Warsaw Pact Joint Armed Forces for the Navy. He retired from active service in 1987 and became a military consultant for the General Inspectors' Group of the USSR Armed Forces.
