Early Life and Career Beginnings

Oberdan Cattani was born on November 9, 1919, in Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil, to Italian immigrants Ernesto and Candida Cattani. He began playing football on the streets of his hometown before joining the amateur club Sete de Setembro.

Joining Palmeiras

In 1940, Cattani caught the attention of scouts from Palestra Itália (now Palmeiras). Despite offers from Corinthians and Santos, he remained firm in his decision to play for the club he had always admired. After a successful trial, he officially became a Palmeiras player on November 9, 1940.

After a year spent in the reserves, Cattani made his debut for Palmeiras in 1941. He quickly became the team's starting goalkeeper and was instrumental in their success. In 1942, the club was forced to change its name to Palmeiras due to Brazil's involvement in World War II against Italy.

International Career

Cattani made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 1944. He played in all six matches of the 1945 South American Championship, helping Brazil finish second behind Argentina. In total, he represented his country nine times and won the Roca Cup in 1945.

Palmeiras Legend

Cattani played for Palmeiras for 14 years, becoming a club legend. He won five Campeonato Paulista titles and the Rio-São Paulo Tournament. He played 351 matches for the club, keeping 207 clean sheets.

Retirement and Legacy

In 1954, Cattani left Palmeiras after his contract was not renewed. He joined Juventus and retired in 1956 at the age of 37. He passed away in 1991, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Brazilian football history.
