Early Life and EducationPyotr Glebka, a prominent Belarusian Soviet poet and academic, was born into a peasant family in 1905. He attended the Belarusian Pedagogical Technical School from 1924 to 1927 and later graduated from the Literary-Linguistic Department of the Belarusian State University in 1930.
Literary Career
Glebka began his literary career in 1925. He joined the literary association "Moladniak" that same year and became a member of the Belarusian Literary Association "Uzvysshcha" in 1926. He served as the secretary of the "Uzvysshcha" journal's editorial board from 1928 to 1930.
Contributions to Belarusian Literature
Glebka authored numerous poems, including "Courage" (dedicated to Vladimir Lenin) and "In Those Days" (about the October Revolution). His dramatic poem "Over the Birch River" (1939) explores the Civil War in Belarus, while "Light from the East" celebrates revolutionary achievements. During World War II, Glebka's writing reached its peak, with poems like "Parcel," "Partisans," and "Native Bread" reflecting patriotism and lyricism.
Academic Achievements
After the war, Glebka worked at the Institute of Literature, Language, and Art of the Academy of Sciences of the Belarusian SSR. He was involved in the compilation of the Belarusian National Creative Anthology (50 volumes) and the Collection of Historic and Cultural Monuments of Belarus (7 volumes).
In 1957, he became the Director of the Institute of Linguistics and oversaw the creation of the "Russian-Belarusian Dictionary." He also led the Institute of Art, Ethnography, and Folklore from 1957 to 1969.
Influence and Recognition
Glebka's poetry is characterized by civic-mindedness and a romantic spirit. He was influenced by the works of Vladimir Mayakovsky. He was elected to the Supreme Soviet of the Belarusian SSR from 1955 to 1967 and participated in sessions of the United Nations General Assembly.
Legacy
Pyotr Glebka passed away in 1969, leaving behind an enduring legacy as a significant figure in Belarusian literature and academia. His contributions to the understanding and preservation of Belarusian culture continue to be celebrated and studied today.
