Oleg V. Mosin: Russian Water Researcher and Biochemist

Early Life and Education

Born in Kaluga, Russia, to a military family, Oleg V. Mosin began his academic journey at the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology named after M.V. Lomonosov in 1992. He pursued his graduate studies in biotechnology at the same institution and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1996.

Academic and Scientific Career

Mosin's scientific work focuses on the isotopic effects of deuterium in biological systems, adaptation to deuterium, and the biosynthesis of isotopically labeled natural compounds. He has studied heavy water's structure, its ability to store and transmit information, and the purification of water from deuterium and oxygen-18 isotopes.

His research also encompasses the activation of water using natural minerals like shungite and zeolite, the biotechnological production of isotopically labeled natural compounds, and the physiological and genetic mechanisms of biological adaptation to heavy water.

Research Highlights

Through his investigations, Mosin has explored:
- Physiological adaptation of microbial objects to heavy water

- Development of a solid-phase adaptation method for cells to heavy water

- Biosynthesis of isotopically labeled amino acids, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates through bioconversion of isotopically labeled growth substrates

- Preparative biosynthesis of amino acids in the presence of high concentrations of heavy water

- Semi-preparative biosynthesis of deuterated bacteriorhodopsin and examination of its functioning

- Biosynthesis of deuterated inosine by Bacillus subtilis

- Investigation of growth, morphological, and biosynthetic parameters of cells adapted to heavy water

Collaborations and Recognition

Mosin has collaborated with eminent scientists, including Professor Ignat Ignatov, Director of the Scientific Research Center of Medical Biophysics in Sofia, Bulgaria. Together, they have conducted research on water structure, the isotopic composition of water, and the origin of life in hot mineral water with elevated deuterium content.

Mosin has been recognized for his contributions with numerous awards, including the Presidential Prize in 1995 and the Professor M. Marinov Prize (Bulgaria) in 2010. He is a member of the Japanese Society of Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and Bionics and the Russian United Democratic Party "Yabloko." He has also received a medal for his contributions to the preservation of the memory of the Kaluga defenders.
