A Ballroom Dance Leader at 76
At the age of 76, Oleg Nikolaevich Plazunov leads a remarkable collective: a ballroom dance group at the House of Veterans in Moscow. His team of 15 dancers has an average age of over 60, defying stereotypes and performing complex dances without concessions to their age.
The Creation of "Grand Seniors"
The ensemble "Grand Seniors" was founded five years ago, despite initial resistance from the House of Veterans' leadership. They doubted the abilities of amateur dancers to handle the demanding physicality of ballroom dance.
Oleg Nikolaevich's Path to Dance
Plazunov's journey to the dance floor was serendipitous. After a serious illness, his doctor recommended he pursue a hobby to distract him from work. Despite his background as a geologist, Plazunov embraced the challenge. After a year of persistent effort, he mastered the art of dance and now teaches others.
A Diverse and Dedicated Ensemble
The members of the ensemble progress at varying paces. Vera Zinovyevna Solovieva (58) had no prior dance experience but now performs gracefully alongside her partner. Vasily Alekseevich Potovin (78), a war veteran, effortlessly executes dance moves and enjoys figure skating. Despite their age, they all share a commitment to regular practice.
A Disciplined Approach
Plazunov maintains a strict regimen. He keeps a journal to track attendance and punctuality, ensuring that all dancers adhere to their commitments. Practices are held twice a week for 2-3 hours. During the summer, the group takes their rehearsals outdoors to a shaded stage in Kuzminki Park.
Ballroom Dance for All
"Grand Seniors" performs a wide repertoire of dance styles, including Latin, jive, rumba, waltz, tango, foxtrot, and dances from the Soviet era. Plazunov emphasizes the importance of a pleasant demeanor: "As soon as you step onto the dance floor, all negativity should be left behind."
A Showcase for Seniors
Maria Vasilyevna is the ensemble's costume designer, creating elaborate costumes for each dancer. Her efforts contribute to the group's polished appearance. Despite initial concerns about the erotic nature of Latin dance, Plazunov has successfully convinced the House of Veterans to embrace this genre. "Grand Seniors" is now a staple at citywide events, showcasing the vitality and talent of older adults.
