Olivia Joyce Compton, an American actress, was born in Lexington, Kentucky. Her parents recognized her acting talent at an early age and decided to move from Oklahoma to Hollywood. After finishing high school, Compton attended Tulsa University, where she studied drama, art, music, and dance for two years. During her time at the university, Compton won a talent show and a beauty contest, which led to her spending two months at a film studio.
Early Career
Compton first gained fame in 1926 when she was named one of the "WAMPAS Baby Stars," alongside Mary Brian, Dolores Costello, Joan Crawford, Dolores del Río, Janet Gaynor, and Fay Wray. From the 1920s to the 1950s, she appeared in B-movies, often playing the role of a dumb blonde, and sometimes without receiving credit in the film. These movies were typically low-budget, and Compton had to use her own costumes and accessories.
Notable Films
Despite the nature of the films she appeared in, Compton had some notable roles in movies such as "Imitation of Life," "Magnificent Obsession," "The Awful Truth," "Rose of Washington Square," "They Drive by Night," "Christmas in Connecticut," "Mildred Pierce," "The Best Years of Our Lives," and "Sorry, Wrong Number."
Personal Life and Legacy
Compton was a devout Christian, and even her gravestone was inscribed with the words "Christian Actress." She married William Francis Kaliher on October 29, 1955, but the marriage ended in divorce in January 1956. She passed away from natural causes in 1997 and was laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills. In July 2009, a book titled "The Real Joyce Compton: Behind the Dumb Blonde Movie Image" was published, authored by Joyce Compton and Michael G. Ankerich.
