Olof Acrel (1717-1806) was a prominent Swedish surgeon who played a significant role in elevating the field of surgery from a trade to a scientific discipline.

Early Life and Education

Born on November 27, 1717, in the outskirts of Stockholm, Olof Acrel pursued his medical education in Sweden and abroad. He honed his skills in ophthalmic surgery, becoming the first Swedish physician to specialize in this field.

Surgical Contributions

Acrel gained practical experience during the War of the Austrian Succession. After the war, he was appointed as the organizer and first chief surgeon of the newly established Seraphina Hospital in Stockholm.

Public Lectures and Academic Appointments

Starting in 1755, Acrel delivered public lectures as a professor. In 1776, he became the Director-General of all Swedish hospitals and infirmaries. His academic achievements were recognized when he was ennobled in 1780.

Legacy

Olof Acrel's contributions to surgery left a lasting impact. His 1745 treatise, "Om Friska s?rs ogenskaper," was highly praised by the renowned Swiss anatomist Albrecht von Haller. Acrel's work "Kirurgiska handelser" (1759) was translated into German and Dutch, disseminating his ideas beyond Sweden.
