Orazio Gentileschi, the renowned Italian painter of the early Baroque period, is celebrated as one of Caravaggio's most gifted pupils. As the father of the equally talented Artemisia Gentileschi, his legacy continues to inspire.

Early Training and Caravaggio's Influence

Born in 1563, Gentileschi initially received artistic instruction from his brother and uncle in the Florentine Mannerist style. However, his relocation to Rome in 1580 led him to encounter the groundbreaking work of Caravaggio. Joining a burgeoning group of artists surrounding Caravaggio, Gentileschi embraced his innovative approach, characterized by dramatic lighting and meticulous realism.

Altarpieces and Panel Paintings

Around 1600, Gentileschi's focus shifted towards altarpieces and easel paintings. While adopting Caravaggio's use of chiaroscuro, he retained elements of the Tuscan school's graceful compositions and vibrant colors. His works from this period demonstrate a unique fusion of artistic influences.

Sojourns and Rediscovery

Gentileschi's paintings from his time in Genoa (1621-1623) and Paris (1623 or 1624) have unfortunately not survived. However, his relocation to England in 1625 marked a significant chapter in his career.
