The Birth of Dilbert

During his time at Pacific Bell, Adams conceived the idea for "Dilbert." His former boss, Mike Goodwin, suggested the character's name. After encountering challenges in publishing his comics, Adams received an encouraging letter from a fan, which reignited his passion for drawing.

Dilbert's Rise to Popularity

Adams' first "Dilbert" comic debuted in 1989 with United Media. While maintaining his day job, he drew comics by waking up at 4 am. Dilbert's popularity soared, leading to its publication in over 400 newspapers by 1994. Adams credited the inclusion of his email address in each comic as a key factor in fostering reader feedback and engagement.

Beyond Dilbert

In 1996, Adams released his first business book, "The Dilbert Principle." He also ventured into television with the "Dilbert" TV series, which ran for two seasons. By the year 2000, Dilbert was published in 2,000 newspapers across 57 countries in 19 languages.
