Oscar Moens: A Controversial Dutch Goalkeeper

Early Career and Ajax Departure

Oscar Moens was born on April 1, 1973. His football journey began with MSV'71 and SVV before he joined Ajax Amsterdam. However, his performances with Ajax were unsatisfying, leading to his departure and a transfer to Excelsior in 1992.

Excelsior and Rise to Prominence

Excelsior provided Moens with a platform to showcase his talent. After four seasons, he honed his skills and became a reliable goalkeeper. In 1995, he made the move to Go Ahead Eagles, and the following year, he joined AZ Alkmaar.

Joining AZ and Dutch League Success

Under Wim Hanegem, AZ achieved success by winning the Dutch second division and earning promotion to the Eredivisie in 1998. Moens was widely regarded as the best goalkeeper in the Netherlands during this period.

Controversies and Loan Spells

Moens' career was often overshadowed by off-field controversies, particularly his affinity for alcohol. However, he maintained that his drinking habits did not affect his performance. Despite his talent, he faced criticism and occasional loan spells at Excelsior and RBC Roosendaal.

International Debut and Recognition

In 1998, Moens made his international debut for the Netherlands against Ghana. Under Louis van Gaal, he was given an opportunity to prove his worth in the national team. His height of 192 cm made him a formidable presence in goal.

Return to AZ and Later Career

Moens returned to AZ in 2001 and remained with the club until the end of his career. He achieved success by winning the Dutch second division title in 1998 with the club. Despite occasional personal challenges, Moens remained a gifted goalkeeper with a unique perspective on the game.
