Biography of Oscar Luigi Scalfaro

Oscar Luigi Scalfaro, the former President of Italy, celebrated his 80th birthday in Rome. He is known for his long political career, spanning over half a century, which is attributed to his statecraft and prudence. Scalfaro began his career as a judge after receiving a legal education at the Catholic University of Milan. During World War II, he supported members of the Italian Resistance and provided assistance to families affected by fascist imprisonment.

In 1946, Scalfaro became a deputy of the Constituent Assembly and consistently held a seat in the country's parliament for all subsequent terms. He also served as a member of several governments. In April 1992, he assumed the position of President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, and just a month later, he was elected as the President of Italy.
