Early Life and Education
Ivan Ivanovich Kovalev was born in 1910 in the village of Starocherkasskaya, Rostov Oblast. The son of a peasant, he graduated from the Novocherkassk Vocational School and worked as a turner in Rostov-on-Don.
Military Career
Kovalev joined the Soviet Army in 1933 and graduated from the Oryol Tank School in 1937. He fought in the Spanish National Revolutionary War (1936-1939) and the Soviet-Finnish War (1939-1940).
World War II
With the outbreak of World War II in June 1941, Kovalev joined the fighting and became a member of the Communist Party in 1942. As deputy commander of the 183rd Tank Brigade, Major Kovalev led an assault group that crossed the Dnieper River in September 1943. They fought off eight counterattacks and held their positions for three days, enabling the rest of the brigade to cross the river.
Heroism and Death
For his bravery, Kovalev was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1944. He continued fighting with distinction until he was killed in action on September 24, 1944, during the Battle of Valmiera in Latvia. According to unconfirmed reports, he was killed by "forest brothers", anti-Soviet partisans.
Legacy
Kovalev was buried in a mass grave in Valmiera but was later reburied in a separate grave in 1984. His wife, Nadezhda Ivanovna Kovalyova, lived in Orel. Kovalev's heroism is remembered through memorials and streets named after him.
