Biography of Otto Braun
Otto Braun was a German revolutionary communist and writer. He was born in Ismaning, near Munich, Germany, into a family of civil servants. Braun began his revolutionary activities while still a student at the teacher training seminar. In 1918, he joined the Spartacus League and in 1919, he became a member of the Communist Party of Germany (KPG). In April 1919, he fought on the barricades of the Bavarian Soviet Republic.
Revolutionary Activities and Arrest
During the 1920s, Otto Braun worked in the illegal military apparatus of the Central Committee of the KPG. He served as the secretary of an underground district committee in Thuringen and also worked as a member of the Fourth Department (intelligence) of the Red Army Staff. He was one of the leaders of the intelligence apparatus of the Central Committee of the KPG. However, in 1926, Braun was arrested for espionage in favor of the Soviet Union.
Escape and Soviet Union
In the spring of 1928, Otto Braun made a daring escape from the notorious Moabit Prison. On April 11, he was kidnapped from the courtroom by members of the KPG, including his lover Olga Benario, and at the decision of the Central Committee of the KPG, he left for the Soviet Union. There, he studied military affairs at the M.V. Frunze Military Academy. After graduating in 1932, he was sent to China as a military advisor by the Executive Committee of the Comintern at the request of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC). In China, he used the pseudonyms "Li De" and "Hua Fu" and was involved in revolutionary events, first in Shanghai and then in the Central Soviet District in southern China. He was the only foreigner to participate in the Long March, leading the Military Academy of the Red Army of China.
Later Years
In 1939, Otto Braun was recalled to Moscow. He served in the Red Army and later worked as a translator and writer. From 1954, he lived in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences at the Central Committee of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany in Berlin. He was awarded the Orders of Karl Marx, the Order of the Patriotic War 1st class, and other high honors from the GDR and the Soviet Union in recognition of his significant contributions.
