Early Life and Education

Otto Demus was born in Hainburg an der Donau, Austria. He studied at the University of Vienna under Josef Strzygowski. Demus's primary areas of interest were Byzantine art and medieval Austrian art.

Career in Monument Conservation and Art History

From 1929 to 1936, Demus served as the Provincial Conservator of Monuments in Carinthia. Subsequently, he held the position of State Conservator at the Department of Monuments in Vienna from 1936 to 1939.

Emigration to England and Return to Austria

In 1939, Demus emigrated to England, where he worked in London. He returned to Austria in 1946 and became the Director of the Department of Monuments until 1964. From 1963 to 1973, he was a Professor of Art History at the University of Vienna.

Contributions to Art History

Demus made significant contributions to the study of Austrian and Byzantine art. His publications include:
