Pablo Álvarez
Early Life and CareerPablo Álvarez is an Argentinian professional footballer who plays as a defender for Club Atlético Rosario Central. Born in Buenos Aires, Álvarez joined the youth academy of Argentinos Juniors before making his senior debut for Boca Juniors in 2003. He made a handful of appearances for Boca before returning to the youth team.
Rise to Prominence
Álvarez returned to prominence in 2004, featuring more regularly for Boca Juniors and winning his first major title, the Copa Sudamericana. He continued to impress in 2005, making 15 appearances for Boca before transferring to Estudiantes in July of that year.
Domestic and International Success
With Estudiantes, Álvarez played a crucial role in helping the club win the 2006 Apertura Championship, their first in 23 years. He made 70 appearances and scored two goals for Estudiantes. In January 2008, Álvarez joined Italian club Calcio Catania alongside fellow Argentinian Matías Silvestre. However, he struggled to break into the team, making only 11 appearances over two seasons.
Return to Argentina and Personal Setback
In January 2009, Álvarez was loaned back to his homeland, joining Rosario Central. He made 14 appearances for the club but was not purchased outright despite a clause in his loan contract. During his stay at Rosario Central, Álvarez and his nine-month-old daughter were victims of a violent robbery and kidnapping.
Resurgence with Catania
In 2009, Siniša Mihajlović became the new head coach of Catania and showed more faith in Álvarez. Under Mihajlović, Álvarez became a regular starter, making 25 appearances in the 2009/10 season. He continued to feature prominently for Catania until 2013 when he joined Genoa.
