Early Life and Career
Pablo Javier Zabaleta Girod was born on January 16, 1985, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From a young age, he showed a passion for football and began training at the local club Obras Sanitarias. After a few seasons, he was noticed by scouts from Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro, one of Argentina's top teams.
San Lorenzo and Early National Team Appearances
For five years, Zabaleta honed his skills at San Lorenzo's youth academy. He played primarily as a central midfielder before transitioning to the right flank. In 2002, he joined the first team and quickly established himself as a promising young player. His speed and ball control caught the attention of scouts worldwide.
Success with RCD Espanyol
In 2005, Zabaleta captained Argentina's U-20 team to victory at the FIFA World Youth Championship. This success attracted the attention of Spanish club RCD Espanyol, who signed him for €3 million. In his first season, he helped Espanyol win the Copa del Rey.
Manchester City and English Premier League Glory
In 2008, Zabaleta joined Manchester City, a team that would soon become a global powerhouse. He lifted the FA Cup in 2011 and the Premier League title in 2012. In 2014, the team clinched the Football League Cup, completing Zabaleta's trio of major English trophies.
Argentina National Team
Zabaleta has represented Argentina since 2005, making 43 appearances for his country. He made his international debut at the 2008 Olympic Games, where he helped Argentina win the gold medal. At the World Cups in 2010 and 2014, Argentina fell short, but Zabaleta was a key member of the team that reached the final in 2014.
