Early Life and Education
Ban Ki-moon was born in Eumseong, South Korea, in 1944. He graduated from Seoul National University in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in international relations. In 1985, he earned a Master's degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Diplomatic Career
Ban Ki-moon began his diplomatic career in 1970, serving as an attaché in the South Korean embassy in New Delhi, India. He subsequently worked as the First Secretary of the South Korean Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations in New York. In 1990, he was appointed as Head of the American Affairs Bureau at the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Senior Appointments
Ban Ki-moon held various high-level positions within the South Korean government. In 1995, he was appointed as Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Planning and International Organizations. From 1996 to 2000, he served as National Security Advisor to the President. In 2000, he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Deputy Foreign Minister.
Ambassador and UN Involvement
From 1998 to 2000, Ban Ki-moon served as South Korea's Ambassador to Austria. During this time, he chaired the Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBTO PrepCom). In 2001, when South Korea presided over the 56th session of the UN General Assembly, Ban Ki-moon was appointed as Chief of Staff to the President of the UN General Assembly.
Foreign Minister
Ban Ki-moon was appointed as South Korea's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade in 2004. He played a key role in mediating inter-Korean relations and the resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue.
UN Secretary-General
In 2006, Ban Ki-moon was elected as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations. He served two terms, from 2007 to 2016. During his tenure, he focused on addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and peacebuilding.
Personal Life
Ban Ki-moon is married and has one son and two daughters. He is a recipient of numerous awards and honors from both South Korea and other countries.
