Panpak Wongpattanakit is a Thai taekwondo athlete who has achieved remarkable success in her career. She is a two-time Olympic champion and currently holds the number one ranking in the women's 49 kg weight class.

Early Life and Family

Panpak was born in Surat Thani, southern Thailand. She is the youngest of three siblings and lost her mother at a young age. Her father, a government schoolteacher, instilled a love of sports in his children, giving them nicknames related to sports: Bowling, Baseball, and Tennis. Her older sister (Bowling) and brother (Baseball) were also former swimmers.

Discovering Taekwondo

Panpak's journey into taekwondo began with a desire to accompany her friend to a competition in Phuket. Her father allowed her to go on the condition that she participate as well. At the time, Panpak had minimal experience in the sport but initially competed with little enthusiasm. However, after losing several matches, she found a new determination and eventually pursued taekwondo professionally.

Career Achievements

Panpak's breakthrough came at the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships, where she won the gold medal in the 46 kg weight class, claiming her first world championship title. She went on to earn a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics in the 49 kg category during her Olympic debut for Thailand.

Despite her initial disappointment after the Olympics, Panpak returned to competition stronger than ever. She secured a bronze medal in the women's flyweight division at the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships. In 2018, she claimed her first Asian Games gold medal in the women's 49 kg event.

Panpak continued to dominate her sport, winning the gold medal in the women's flyweight division at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships. She was honored as the Female Athlete of the Year by World Taekwondo at the 2019 World Taekwondo Gala Awards.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Panpak reached the pinnacle of her career by capturing the gold medal in the women's 49 kg weight class. This victory marked Thailand's first ever Olympic gold medal in taekwondo and made Panpak the country's only gold medalist at the 2020 Games.

Panpak's success continued in 2023 with a silver medal at the World Taekwondo Championships. At the Rome Grand Prix in June, she became the first athlete to win ten gold medals in the women's 49 kg class.

In a historic feat, Panpak defended her Olympic title at the 2024 Summer Olympics, winning a second consecutive gold medal in the women's 49 kg taekwondo event. She became the first Thai athlete to win two Olympic gold medals in a row and the first from her country to earn three consecutive Olympic medals. Prior to the tournament, she had announced that it would be her final competition, citing the intense toll training had taken on her body.

Following the 2024 Olympics, Panpak revealed that she was in a nine-year relationship with fellow taekwondo athlete Ramnarong "Junior" Sawekwiharee. They had kept their romance a secret due to a rule prohibiting romantic relationships between national athletes.
