Panteleimon Giorgadze: A Life in Politics

Early Life and Education

Panteleimon Giorgadze, a prominent Georgian politician, was born in the Soviet Union. He pursued higher education in mining engineering at the Georgian Industrial Institute and continued his military studies at the Alma-Ata Border School (1948), Military Academy of Internal Affairs and Security of the USSR (1956), and Military Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Armed Forces (1973).

Political Career

Giorgadze's political journey began in 1992 when he became the Chairman of the United Communist Party of Georgia. His party actively opposed the government and criticized then-President Mikheil Saakashvili, labeling the administration as "bloodthirsty neo-fascists."

Crackdown and Repression

In 2006, Giorgadze's home was raided in a police operation aimed at arresting his son's supporters. During the operation, authorities also seized Giorgadze's award-winning pistol, gifted by Fidel Castro, and alleged that the communist party members faced repression from the government.

Meeting in Tskhinvali

In August 2007, Giorgadze met with representatives of the Ossetian community in Tskhinvali, Georgia. He expressed the shared desire for peace between the Ossetian and Georgian peoples and acknowledged the desire of the Ossetians to no longer be part of Georgia under the current regime.

Awards and Recognition

Giorgadze was bestowed with the Order of Friendship of South Ossetia in 2007.

Panteleimon Giorgadze passed away on March 3, 2009, in Tbilisi, Georgia. He is remembered as a prominent political figure who actively engaged in shaping the political landscape of Georgia.
