Early Life and Education

Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, a Mexican political and diplomatic pioneer, was born in Mexico City. She holds a master's degree in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, and a bachelor's degree from El Colegio de México.

Diplomatic Career

Espinosa's diplomatic journey began in 1981 when she joined Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has held various positions within the ministry, including director of international organizations, coordinator to the deputy foreign secretary, and councilor at Mexico's mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

Permanent Representative to the UN

As Mexico's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, Espinosa played a crucial role in addressing issues of drug trafficking prevention, human rights, social development, women's empowerment, and child protection. She chaired the UN General Assembly's Third Committee during the 51st session.

Ambassadorial Roles

Espinosa has served as Mexico's ambassador to Germany from 2001 to 2002 and from 2013 to 2016. From 2002 to 2006, she was Mexico's ambassador to Austria, concurrently serving in Slovakia and Slovenia and representing Mexico in international organizations in Vienna.

Minister of Foreign Affairs

In 2006, Espinosa was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Felipe Calderón, a position she held until 2012. During her tenure, she championed gender equality and sustainable development.
