Biography of Patricia Lynn Racette
Patricia Lynn Racette is an American opera singer and soprano known for her active performances in various opera houses around the world. She has developed a strong relationship with the San Francisco Opera, where she has been performing regularly since 1989. Racette has also worked with the Metropolitan Opera, making her debut in 1995.
Early Life and Musical Education
Racette was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, and her family moved to Bedford, New Hampshire when she was seven. She began playing the guitar at the age of eight and accompanied her own singing, which sparked her interest in vocal music. Racette studied music in school and even participated in regional choir competitions under the guidance of Richard Maynard. Upon graduating from high school in 1983, she enrolled at the University of North Texas with the intention of studying vocal jazz. However, she soon discovered that her voice was better suited for opera and decided to pursue a career in that field.
Operatic Career
Racette made her first appearance on an opera stage at Fort Worth College in Texas, where she was given the lead role in Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah." She made her professional opera debut in 1988, performing as Cio-Cio-San in Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly." In 1989, Racette made her debut at the San Francisco Opera in the opera "Aida." She later received several roles in the company's training program, "Merola."
In 1992, Racette joined the New York City Opera, making her debut as Musetta in Puccini's "La bohème." The following year, she returned to the company as Micaëla in Bizet's "Carmen." In the summer of 1993, Racette made her first appearance at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where she portrayed Donna Elvira in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." Concurrently, she continued to work with the San Francisco Opera.
Racette's international debut came in 1994 when she performed at the Vienna State Opera and the Welsh National Opera. She received warm receptions and gained significant attention after winning the Marian Anderson Award.
In 1994, Racette was offered a contract with the Metropolitan Opera and was given the opportunity to perform as Musetta once again in the spring of 1995. Her performance was a success, and she soon became a regular participant in the opera house's productions. Racette continues to perform at the San Francisco Opera, Metropolitan Opera, and various other prestigious opera houses worldwide.
