Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal

Patrick Bond is a prominent professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where he has directed the Centre for Civil Society since 2004. His academic journey began at Swarthmore College, where he pursued economics, followed by Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He obtained his doctorate in geography and environmental engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 1993.

Academic Interests and Research

Professor Bond's research encompasses a diverse range of disciplines, including political economy, sociology, and political science. His scholarly investigations have led to the development of the theory of sub-imperialism.

Governmental and Academic Experience

From 1994 to 2002, Bond served as an advisor to the South African government, contributing to over a dozen policy frameworks, such as the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) and the RDP White Paper. Additionally, he taught at the University of the Witwatersrand's School of Governance from 1997 to 2004.

International Recognition and Outreach

Bond's expertise has garnered international recognition. He has served as a keynote speaker at the "Democratisation in Africa: Past and Future" conference organized by the University of Leeds' Centre for African Studies in December 2009.
