On March 1, 1992, Patrick married actress Yvette Nipar, who was five months pregnant at the time. Their son, Chance, was born in July, and less than a year later, the couple divorced in June 1993.

After the divorce, Patrick met Olivia Newton-John, who rose to fame in the 1970s and starred in the film adaptation of the musical "Grease" alongside John Travolta in 1978. Despite Olivia's success, their relationship was tumultuous and on-again, off-again. They lived together for nine years but never officially married.

In the months leading up to his disappearance, Patrick's financial situation was dire. He had a meager $755 in his bank account, while he owed $8,000 in child support and had a credit card debt of $19,000.

On June 30, 2005, at the age of 48, Patrick went on a night fishing trip aboard the chartered boat "Freedom" with 23 passengers and three crew members off the coast of San Pedro, California. No one onboard noticed when and under what circumstances Patrick disappeared. Olivia was traveling in Australia at the time, and it wasn't until July 6, 2005, when he failed to attend a family gathering, that his absence was noted.

Despite extensive search efforts, Patrick's body was never found, leading the Coast Guard, police, and insurance company to conclude that he had drowned. However, in November 2008, the investigation was reopened following rumors that Patrick, buried in debt, had staged his death.

Private investigators were hired to search for Patrick in Mexico, and a website, FindPatrickMcDermott.com, was created to track his whereabouts. According to investigators, Patrick was living under his own name in a small town near Puerto Vallarta on the western coast of Mexico, and there were over 20 sightings of him in Mexico and Central America. In January 2009, a representative for Patrick claimed that he was alive and well, living in Mexico, writing a book, and asked to be left alone.

The investigation revealed that there were several incidents preceding Patrick's disappearance. Firstly, shortly before his alleged death, Patrick purchased a Magna, and secondly, someone attempted to access his computer after he went missing. All correspondence with Olivia was deleted, but a file on how to create a fake identification was found. It is unknown if Olivia was aware of Patrick's deception. She did not report his disappearance until she was approached by reporters.

The U.S. Department of State listed Patrick McDermott as a non-compliant parent who was evading responsibility for his child. However, no active search efforts were conducted by government agencies. Despite persistent requests from various internet publications and press representatives, the public has not been shown any photographic evidence to validate his whereabouts.
